Sovietzka – Screening and conversation

In September 2023, Koret Center and the Nadav Foundation held a festive screening of the final episode of the series Sovietzka. Created by Dana Abramovich and coproduced by Artza Productions and Kan 11, Sovietzka follows Anat, a math student who is an Israeli-born daughter of immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Anat struggles with questions of identity in light of her parents’ cultural heritage and its friction points with the Israeli lifestyle.
The event opened at the ANU Museum with a theme-tour of Soviet Jewry, proceeded to the finale screening, and concluded with a panel featuring creator Ms. Abramovitch, alongside Dr. Alex Valdman from the Department of History and anthropologist Dr. Anna Prashizky, both from TAU. The moderator was journalist Marina Kigel.
The discussion revolved around the creative process of the show as well as the adolescence of “Sabra” descendants of immigrants from the former USSR and the formation of their independent personal identities. The audience was exposed to the speakers’ personal stories, the sociological and historical aspects of immigration, and the reasons that led to the proliferation of original work in this genre.
