Burning Psalms: Integrating Shoah memory into Jewish liturgy

How can we reimagine the Psalms in the shadow of the Holocaust? In what ways can liturgy and
poetry help us explore faith, resilience, and reshape the future of collective memory?
Prof. Menachem Rosensaft will present his new book: Burning Psalms: Confronting Adonai after Auschwitz (Ben Yehuda Press, 2025), and together with Prof. Havi Dreifus will discuss questions of historical trauma, spiritual reflection, liturgy, poetry, and the future of Shoah memory.
The event is part of the Cross-cultural: New Trends in Jewish Studies lecture series 2025, and is hosted by the Koret Society of Fellows.

Prof. Menachem Z. Rosensaft is professor of law at Cornell Law School, lecturer-in-law at Columbia Law School, General Counsel Emeritus of the World Jewish Congress, and a leading activist in Holocaust remembrance. He is the co-founder of the International Network of Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, and the author and editor of numerous books on the memory of the Shoah, faith, resilience, and Jewish identity.

Prof. Havi Dreifuss is a professor of history at the Department of Jewish History at Tel Aviv University and serves as the head of The Institute for the History of Polish Jewry and Israel-Poland Relations. Additionally, she heads the Center for Research on the Holocaust in Poland at Yad Vashem.
She is a historian of the Jewish-Polish relations, religious life under Nazi persecution and antisemitism and is the author of several books, among which The People’s Uprising and the Fall of the Warsaw Ghetto, April 1942–June 1943 (forthcoming Brandeis University Press).
