The Jewish community in Iran, one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world, has experienced periods of prosperity alongside significant challenges throughout the centuries. In the ancient Persian empires, Jews enjoyed religious freedom and special status but also faced social and political restrictions. Over time, particularly in the 20th century, there were significant changes in the status of Jews in the country, from a relatively modern state under the Shah’s rule to the Islamic Revolution in 1979, which dramatically shifted the balance of power.
The Islamic Revolution led to a dramatic transformation in the lives of Iranian Jews.
